Behind unbeaten days from Luke Coble, Rylon Hight and Pedro Vargas, the Southern Nash High wrestling team went 3-1 on Saturday to finish second at its annual Firebird Duals tournament.
The Firebirds defeated 3-A Big East Conference mates Rocky Mount and Northern Nash as well as West Johnston of the 3-A Greater Neuse River Conference but lost to Rosewood. The 1-A Carolina Conference Golden Eagles went unbeaten in winning the tournament.
Vargas collected three pins and a forfeit win at 220 pounds while fellow senior Hight won two by fall and two by forfeit at 195 pounds. Coble, a sophomore, had three pins at 170 pounds and won by forfeit at 160 pounds.
In Southern Nash’s 64-16 win over Northern Nash, Jonathan Salazar, Tanner Baker, Noah Fulghum, Trondrayl Newsome, Coble and Vargas each pinned their opponents.
The Firebirds picked up eight forfeit victories in their 72-12 defeat of Rocky Mount while Coble, Newsome, Hight and Kameron Bryant registered wins by fall.
In the loss to Rosewood, Coble, Hight and Vargas each pinned their foes, as did Ben Emig at 152 pounds while Daniel Medina claimed forfeit points at 126 points.
Southern Nash used pins by Emig, Coble and Vargas, along with a huge 12-10 decision by Fulghum at 145 points, to help get the Firebirds past West Johnston 45-28.
Southern Nash is back in action Saturday at Fike High for the 3-A Big East Duals. The Firebirds will host the 3-A Big East individual tournament on Saturday, Jan. 26.
