At the end of 2018, the Southern Nash High School Future Farmers of America re-chartered its alumni chapter to increase support for agriculture students at the school. Having an alumni chapter allows the Southern Nash FFA chapter to have access to more student opportunities, scholarships and community resources.
The alumni chapter began this year with 52 members and four newly elected officers. Chris Winstead was elected president, Gregg Wall was named vice president, Peggy Winstead was elected secretary and Sheila Glover was elected treasurer.
The organization meets the second Tuesday of every month in the high school’s media center to fellowship and plan endeavors to help support the FFA chapter.
The alumni chapter is made up of friends, family, and alumni of the Southern Nash FFA chapter and is inclusive of anyone interested in supporting the FFA. Alumni members have already found ways to become involved, including volunteering with the annual fruit sale, setting up a booth at the school’s Christmas vendor sale and recruiting sponsors for upcoming projects on the school farm.
Southern Nash agriculture teacher and FFA adviser Tori Whitley said advisers are excited to see the alumni chapter relaunch as more students join FFA and their needs in the club and classroom increase.
