DURHAM — Bolstered by the belief that the Southern Nash High varsity boys basketball team can steal a game in the final few minutes, the Firebirds departed for halftime in Saturday’s North Carolina High School Athletic Association 3-A third-round game with Durham Hillside in striking distance.

But trailing by seven entering the third quarter, the Firebirds lost sight of the top seed in the 3-A East bracket after halftime.

Hillside opened the third quarter on a 13-2 run and pulled away for a 67-33 victory.

Southern Nash of the Big East Conference, the No. 25 seed and the lowest remaining seed in any of the NCHSAA’s four classifications, ended its year with a 16-10 record. Hillside, the Big 8 champion, moved to 28-1 and faces No. 4 Burlington Williams in the regional semifinal.

The Firebirds held an early 7-6 lead before a three-point play from the Hornets capped off a 14-2 first-half run.

Southern Nash careers closed for Darius Edmudson and Artavius Allen.
