ROCKY MOUNT — Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina has selected Nash UNC Health Care as a Blue Distinction Center+ for knee and hip replacement.

Blue Distinction centers are nationally designated health care facilities shown to deliver improved patient safety and better health outcomes.

Hospitals designated as Blue Distinction Centers+ for knee and hip replacement demonstrate expertise in total knee and total hip replacement surgeries, resulting in fewer patient complications and hospital readmissions.

“Knee and hip replacement procedures are among the fastest growing medical treatments in the U.S.” said Dr. Greig McAvoy, medical director of Nash UNC’s joint replacement program. “Our team is committed to offering the highest quality knee and hip procedures and to continuously improve our patient care. Having our joint replacement program recognized as a Blue Distinction Center + is a salute to the work we have done to offer the best patient care in our area.”

In addition to meeting these quality thresholds, hospitals designated as Blue Distinction Centers+ are on average 20% more cost-efficient compared to other hospitals, according to Blue Cross NC.

“There is a robust selection criteria for Blue Cross NC’s Blue Distinction Center+ designation” said Marcia Ratcliff, physical therapist and Nash UNC’s Joint Replacement Center supervisor. “There are only a select few joint replacement programs across the state that hold this distinction, and we are proud to be one of them.”

The Blue Distinction Specialty Care program allows Blue Cross and Blue Shield members to find health care facilities with certified high-quality care and good patient results in a number of different procedures, according to Blue Cross NC.

“Achieving the Blue Distinction Center for knee and hip replacement designation is an important milestone,” said Dr. Larry Wu, medical officer at Blue Cross NC. “When our members see the designation, they can know that Nash UNC Health Care shares Blue Cross NC’s commitment to improving access to quality, effective specialty care.”
