It took just one game for new Southern Nash girls soccer coach Robbie Kennedy to lead the Ladybirds past their 2018 win total as they delivered a 4-0 shutout to visiting SouthWest Edgecombe in the Feb. 27 season opener.

Kathryn Robinson posted the shutout in goal while Rubi Guttierrez and Melissa Hernandez led the Southern Nash defensive effort.

Nef Gonzalez notched a pair of goals while Layla Austin and Jada Zimmerman scored one each.

SMITHFIELD — Jonathan Stallings threw five no-hit innings before exiting in the sixth and the Southern Nash varsity baseball team thumped host Smithfield-Selma 9-2 in the season opener for both teams Feb. 27.

Stallings gave up a lead-off double in the sixth inning with the 3-A Big East Conference Firebirds up 8-0. The 3-A Greater Neuse Conference Spartans eventually spoiled his shutout bid and added another run in the seventh off Southern Nash reliever Trey Mizzelle, who struck out four. Stallings walked one and struck out five.

Fellow senior Jason Montague ripped a solo home run in the Firebirds’ five-run third inning, part of a three-RBI day for him. Matthew Horrigan was 2 for 3 and Tanner Baker went 2 for 4 as the Firebirds pounded out nine hits. Jason Bland, Luke Edwards, Greyson Curtis and Stallings each had a hit.

Ladybirds lance SSS 15-1 in 3 innings

SMITHFIELD — Southern Nash scored six runs in its first at-bat of the season on its way to a 15-1 thrashing of host Smithfield-Selma in the varsity softball opener for both teams Feb. 27.

Kierstin Cooper drilled a three-run home run and finished with four RBIs for the 3-A Big East Conference Ladybirds while Alissa Bailey was 3 for 3 with a triple in the game that was halted after three innings.

Elisabeth Collie and Ricki Bartley each rapped a pair of hits.

Firebirds blank Rams in opener

Southern Nash swept visiting Cleveland in the boys tennis season opener Feb. 27 on the Firebirds’ tennis courts.

Earning singles victories for Southern Nash were Parker Strickland, Dylan Alligood, Hector Perez, David Vasquez, Adolfo Gonzalez and Michael Hernandez.

Doubles wins were claimed by Strickland-Vasquez, Pereez-Gonzalez and Alligood-Hernandez.
