A dramatic multi-agency chase led by the U.S. Marshals Service on Thursday near Sharpsburg culminated in the capture of a fugitive wanted in connection with an armed robbery and shooting in February in Rocky Mount.

The U.S. Marshals Service Violent Fugitive Task Force located Kendric Deshawn Person, 29, of Leggett, on Thursday morning at the Holiday Motel near Sharpsburg, but Person initially evaded escape by running into the nearby woods. An intensive manhunt lasting several hours and involving helicopters as well as officers on the ground ensued.

Person eventually was captured and taken into custody without further incident.

“The Nash County Sheriff’s Office, N.C. State Highway Patrol, Rocky Mount Police Department and the Sharpsburg Police Department all assisted greatly in affecting Person’s arrest,” said Bryan Konig of the U.S. Marshals Service.

Person was being sought based on warrants from the Rocky Mount Police Department charging him with two counts of attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, robbery with a dangerous weapon, assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a firearm by a felon.

The charges related to an incident that occurred about 9:25 p.m. Feb. 6 on the 500 block of East Raleigh Boulevard, according to Rocky Mount police reports. A 33-year-old man was seriously injured during the course of an armed robbery at the JMS Food Mart.

Person is being held in the Edgecombe County Detention Center. His bond status was not available by press time.

The USMS Violent Fugitive Task Force is composed of investigators from the U.S. Marshals Service, Rocky Mount Police Department, state Department of Public Safety, Pitt County Sheriff’s Office, Kinston Police Department and New Bern Police Department.
