Volunteers sought for cemetery cleanup
SPRING HOPE — The Friends of Oakdale Cemetery are seeking volunteers to help provide “some raking, bushes pruned, and some basic TLC” at the cemetery from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 19.
Volunteers are asked to bring rakes, pruning shears, gloves and plastic garbage cans. Those unable to assist are still invited to turn out and show support. For more information, call Becky Perniciaro at 252-303-0425.
League of Women Voters to meet
ROCKY MOUNT — The League of Women Voters Twin Counties Chapter will present “Advancing Democracy Through Involvement in the League” at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16 at the Unitarian Fellowship Center, 516 N. Church St. Jo Nicholas, president of the North Carolina League of Women Voters, will be the guest speaker.
Library to host author Etaf Rum
ROCKY MOUNT — The Friends of Braswell Memorial Library will hold a “Meet the Author” reception featuring Etaf Rum, the New York Times bestselling author of “A Woman Is No Man,” from 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17 at the 727 N. Grace St. library. The event is free and open to the public.
Bikers for Christ plan cancer fundraiser
ROCKY MOUNT — Bikers for Christ will hold a cancer fundraiser bike ride Saturday, Oct. 26 at Black Cat Harley Davidson, 928 N. Winstead Ave. Registration is from 9-11 a.m. and the ride starts at 11. Entrance fee is $20 per rider and $10 per passenger.
There will be door prizes, a 50/50 raffle, gun raffle, dunking tank, vendors, DJ and live music by Don Cox and food provided by Doug Sauls BBQ. Food is included free with the ride and is $8 per plate for non-riders.
The UNC Rex mobile mammography unit will have mammogram screenings on site if at least 12 women age 35 and up are registered by Oct. 11. Register online at https:/www.unchealthcare.org/mobile-mammography-open-scheduling. Participants should bring their insurance card and photo ID.

Halloween costume parade planned
NASHVILLE — Children and staff from Nashville Elementary School will hold a Halloween costume parade around 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 31 at Nash County’s Claude A. Mayo Administration Building, 120 W. Washington St. Participants plan to leave the school around 9 a.m. About 150 students are expected to participate.
