Bailey native Tina Beddingfield has fond memories of the old Farmer Brothers store from her childhood.
“I used to come here with my grandpa all the time,” she said. “We’d come to town, and he’d sit and talk with the old men. I’d have my Moon Pie and my nabs. I was the happiest kid you could have.”
Beddingfield and her husband, Jason, have worked to create that same sense of comfort in the same location with their new restaurant, Bonanza Grill, which opened last week. A grand opening celebration is being planned for the next couple of weeks.
Tina Beddingfield, who worked in early childhood education, and Jason Beddingfield, who owns a construction business, said having a restaurant was a longtime dream.
“This is definitely something different,” she said. “We surround ourselves with people who do have the experience back (in the kitchen), so my main focus is on customer service.”
“It’s been good. It gives us an opportunity to learn some new things,” Jason Beddingfield added
They even came up with the name several years ago to pay homage to one of their favorite television shows — “Bonanza,” a popular Western that had a 14-season run on NBC.
“We said if we ever did this, we’d have to find a place that fit that title. This little storefront, the setup and the way it looked — it just all goes together,” Tina Beddingfield said. “It all fell into place. The Lord kept opening doors.”
The restaurant offers traditional grill items and homestyle comfort food, such as burgers, hot dogs, pork chops and apple turnovers. It also serves ice cream.
“We just try to put together some good, country food,” she said. “I just think about all the things I grew up with in the South that I know people like to eat.”
The Beddingfields hope that having a restaurant in Bailey will spur others to begin businesses and help revitalize the town.
“There’s a lot of opportunity for growth around here in Bailey. There’s a lot of good people around this area. I think as we do it, the more people will help bring more life back to town,” Jason said.
The Bonanza Grill, located at 12544 Hanover Street in Bailey, is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Fridays for lunch and dinner, and 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays for breakfast and lunch.
